Not long ago, the idea of green burial was unheard of by most funeral directors, and today, for a variety of practical and emotional reasons, many people still resist the idea. However, there are signs that the industry is awakening to the concept, especially since many people with environmental sympathies wish to leave the world as they have tried to live in it. A growing number of products and services can help them do just that.

Arlington National Cemetery

For Burial in a National Cemetery
Burial benefits available include a gravesite in any the 128 national VA cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a presidential memorial certificate, at no cost to the family. Some veterans may also be eligible for burial allowances. Cremated remains are buried or inurned in national cemeteries in the same manner and with the same honors as casketed remains.

Great Lakes National Cemetery

Burial benefits are als available for veterans buried in a private cemetery include a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a presidential memorial certificate, at no cost to the family. Some veterans may also be eligible for burial allowances. There are no benefits available to spouses and dependents buried in a private cemetery.

Request Military Discharge (DD - 214)

Request military personnel records online. You may use this system if you are
•A military veteran, or
•Next of kin of a deceased, former member of the military
•The next of kin can be any of the following: surviving spouse that has not remarried, father, mother, son, daughter, sister, or brother.

Veteran Benefits Available

Burial Benefits Available from the National Cemetery Administration. Requests for burial in a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) national cemetery cannot be made via the Internet.
The VA does not make funeral arrangements or perform cremations. Families should make these arrangements with a funeral provider or cremation office. Any item or service obtained from a funeral home or cremation office will be at the families expense.
